The Holdout is the thriller I have been waiting for. Contemporary thrillers/true crime novels have been a genre of recent interest to me and though I’ve been excited about them, I’ve found they can be lackluster. There are details that clash and entire chapters that require further explanation. A few times now, I’ve seen a new thriller on #bookstagram, only to read it myself and be thoroughly uninterested.
Conversely, I finished The Holdout late at night, and the next morning I was still reeling; Graham Moore expertly delivers a surprise ending that falls just within the reader’s vision–believable, but unpredictable. The legal aspect of thrillers is often where they fall apart. There is so much room for inaccuracies that lend themselves to demonstrating the authors’ technical inadequacies.
In The Holdout, the author circumvents that by diving directly into the legal aspect of the thriller. Maya Seale, our protagonist, is straightforward. Her truth is in plain sight. The thrill of this novel is the crime itself, of course, but also, the possibility that the truth might not set you free, that it may not be the best shot at freedom, is chilling. The circumstances of the plot make it even more startling; it could actually happen to anyone. The plot holes that readers ignore in order to enjoy thrillers are closed up by Maya’s career as a lawyer; her professional knowledge explains her thinking and her investigative skills.
I give the novel five stars for the genre, and three in general. At the end of the day, it’s not my favorite genre. The story is captivating, but the narration lacks lyricism. The details mentioned are important to the story and push the narrative forward, but the ones missing are those important to me as a person. I can’t imagine any of the characters. I don’t see the feelings the characters have for each other. In all fairness, these are things missing from all the thrillers I’ve read. Presumably, the lack of these things is central to defining a thriller, but I feel how I feel. I doubt I’ll seek out more books by Graham Moore, but I enjoyed this one; if thrillers are your thing, check it out.

The Holdout (La Rechazadora) es el “thriller” (la novela de suspenso) que he estado esperando. Los thrillers contemporáneos / las novelas de crimen real han sido un género de reciente interés para mi y, aunque estoy entusiasmada con ellos, he descubierto que pueden ser mediocres. Hay detalles que chocan y capítulos enteros que requieren una explicación más detallada. Algunas veces, he visto un nuevo “thriller” en #bookstagram, solo para leerlo yo misma y estar completamente desinteresada.
Contrariamente, terminé The Holdout de noche, y a la mañana siguiente seguía impresionada; Graham Moore ofrece de manera experta un final sorprendente que se encuentra justo dentro de la visión del lector: creíble, pero impredecible. Le doy a la novela cinco estrellas para el género, y tres en general. Al final del día, no es mi género preferido. La historia es cautivadora, pero la narración carece de lirismo. Los detalles mencionados son importantes para la historia y empujan la narrativa hacia adelante, pero los que faltan son los importantes para mí como persona. No puedo imaginar ninguno de los personajes. No veo los sentimientos que los personajes tienen el uno por el otro. Para ser justos, estas son cosas que faltan en todos los thrillers que he leído. Presumiblemente, la falta de estas cosas es fundamental para definir un thriller, pero siento cómo me siento. Dudo que busque más libros de Graham Moore, pero disfruté este; Si los thrillers son lo tuyo, chequea este.
