This novel is not at all what I anticipated. Based on the synopsis, and to be fair, the title, I expected this to be a much lighter read. 

The narration comes from the point of view of “we”; It is not explicitly defined, but one can presume the “we” is the Oak Knoll book club. Their narration offers a unique vantage point from which we, the readers, can see the characters’ places in their own small society, but also in society overall. The narrators make beautiful observations about the facts that make up the story, and astute reflections on human nature, or perhaps the nature of people like the ones in the story. 

There is no happy ending. There is a climax and a resolution, but not one I can imagine any reader would have liked. The alternatives were not much better, and the one possibility at a happy ending would have eliminated the plot completely. 

I felt awful reading this story. It was like watching a car crash in which no one could do anything to stop it, and yet solutions seemed so close to being within reach. That being said, I really enjoyed it. Therese Anne Fowler understands the craft of writing and follows an excellent arc. She tugged on my heart strings a bit hard, but I would let it happen again. Overall, it was a quick, but heavy read—I give it 4 stars.

Esta novela no es en absoluto lo que anticipé. Según la sinopsis y, para ser justos, el título, esperaba que fuera una lectura mucho más ligera.

La narración proviene del punto de vista de "nosotros"; No se define explícitamente, pero se puede suponer que el "nosotros" es el club de lectura Oak Knoll. Su narración ofrece un punto de vista único desde el cual nosotros, los lectores, podemos ver los lugares de los personajes en su propia sociedad pequeña, pero también en la sociedad en general. Los narradores hacen hermosas observaciones sobre los hechos que componen la historia y reflexiones astutas sobre la naturaleza humana, o tal vez la naturaleza de las personas como las de la historia.

No hay final feliz. Hay un clímax y una resolución, pero no me imagino que a ningún lector le hubiera gustado. Las alternativas no eran mucho mejores, y la posibilidad de un final feliz hubiera eliminado la trama por completo.

Me sentí fatal leyendo esta historia. Era como ver un accidente automovilístico en el que nadie podía hacer nada para detenerlo, y sin embargo, las soluciones parecían tan cerca de estar a su alcance. Dicho esto, realmente lo disfruté. Therese Anne Fowler comprende el oficio de la escritura y sigue un excelente arco. Jugó con mi corazón un poco fuerte, pero dejaría que volviera a suceder. En general, fue una lectura rápida, pero intensa: le doy 4 estrellas.
